gifts from my garden

One of the great joys for me, is the coming together with family and friends over good food and wine, as we share favourite dishes, reminisce over the past year’s tears and triumphs, while having conversations lasting well into the night.

Picking herbs from your own herbal garden, to add to your favourite dishes, is such a treat. Fresh herbs, added to any dish, enhance the flavours and nutritional value. Herbs are abundant and easy to grow. Starting your own herbal garden can be part of reconnecting with nature while receiving the nourishment from your own backyard.

Some of my favourite herbs from my garden (with some health benefits) are:

  • Rosemary: rich in anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds to boost the immune system and improve blood circulation.
  • Oregano: an excellent source of fibre, vitamin K, manganese, iron, vitamin E, tryptophan and calcium.
  • Basil: supports a healthy digestive system and controls blood sugar levels. Combined with olive oil in a basil pesto, it is a great anti-inflammatory boost for a healthy cardiovascular system!
  • Thyme: great for colds, sore throats and coughs.
  • Parsley: packed with Vitamin K to support healthy bones.

Herbs never stop giving. You can pick them to add a dash of green to your festive table, or include them as part of your gift packaging. Or you can make your own bouquet garni.

A “bouquet garni” is a bunch of herbs, typically encased in a muslin bag, used for flavouring dishes.

Combine a few sprigs of rosemary and oregano with a bay leaf or two. Add peppercorns if you wish, and bundle them together in a piece of cheesecloth or muslin. Tie this together with a piece of string, and drop it into the stewing pot of goodness on your stove.
